Tuition Information: Undergraduate residents $9,187, nonresidents $23,575; graduate residents $14,238, nonresidents $27,900 for the 2012 – 2013 school year. Tuition does not include resident fees of $1,736 or nonresident fees of $2,340 per year.

Scope of Program:
B. F. A. candidates at Virginia Tech must complete foundation courses in principles of art and design, principles of new media, drawing and art and design and pass a portfolio review to be admitted to the major. Students who choose the Digital Art concentration focus on life drawing, art history, studio art, multimedia studio, computer animation, new media theory, digital photography, professional practices and 3D computer animation. Students complete a senior studio and create a portfolio and/or senior exhibition. Visual Communication Design students concentrate on studio arts, design for print, layout, typography, 2D and 3D design, visual branding, visual communications, interactive arts studio and topics in graphic design. All students complete an internship and create a portfolio.
M. F. A. candidates in Creative Technologies complete coursework in art history, drawing methods and concepts, new media theory, new communications technology, digital arts, web design, computer animation, 3D animation and interactive design. Students must pass oral reviews after completion of 15 and 45 credit hours of study. All students create a thesis and thesis exhibition.
Visual Communication Design students must purchase an Apple MacBook Pro laptop computer. A portfolio is required with the application to the Studio Art and Creative Technologies programs. Art, merit and need-based scholarships are available, as are graduate assistantships. Virginia residents are encouraged to apply for state-sponsored grants and scholarships.
