Scope of Program:
Art and Communication Design undergraduates at the University of North Texas begin their studies with core coursework in design, drawing, art appreciation and art history. Students in both programs must pass a portfolio review to be admitted to the major; they must also pass midpoint, junior and senior exit portfolio reviews.
Communication Design students focus on history of graphic design, typography, figure drawing, art direction, foundations for communication design, interaction design, image making and color theory and packaging and brand design. Students must choose a specialization in either Graphic Design or Art Direction. All students create a portfolio. New Media Art students concentrate on video art, moving image, visual arts, figure drawing, experimental 3D and computer applications in visual arts.
M. F. A. candidates in the Innovation Studies program must pass a graduate portfolio review each term. They complete coursework in critical thinking, design research methods and theory, applied research, history of graphic design and collaborative design studio. All students must complete a practicum and minor, pass oral examinations and create a Problem In Lieu of Thesis (P. I. L. O. T.) project.
M. F. A. candidates in the Studio Art program may choose the New Media Art concentration. Students in this program focus on art history, new media studio coursework, professional practices and creative projects. All students create a thesis and M. F. A. exhibition.
Communication Design majors must purchase an Apple MacBook Pro laptop computer. A portfolio is required with the application to the M. F. A. program. Applicants to the B. F. A. programs in Studio Art and Communication Design may submit an optional, one-page document or image with their application. Art, merit and need-based scholarships are available, as are graduate assistantships.
