Scope of Program:
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) offers a 60-credit Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a 72-credit Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Arts. UMBC's Visual Arts Foundation Program includes coursework in 2D, 3D and camera visual concepts, time-based media, drawing, visual culture and art history. Animation/Interactive Media students continue with coursework in animation, sound
design, computer animation, interactive media, animation techniques and time and motion. Students complete a senior project. Graphic Design students concentrate on typography, word and image, origins and issues in graphic design, computer-based design and design practicum.
M. F. A. candidates in Imaging and Digital Arts complete coursework in history and theory of imaging, contemporary art, curatorial seminar, imaging and digital studio, visual art and computer art. All students must pass a third-semester portfolio review and oral examinations. Students create a thesis exhibition.
All Visual Arts undergraduates must purchase a MacBook Pro laptop computer. A portfolio is required with both the undergraduate and graduate application. Maryland residents are encouraged to apply for Knott Scholarships and the Maryland Awards Program. Need-based and merit scholarships are available.
