Scope of Program:
Undergraduate Graphic Communications students at The University of Houston begin their studies as pre-majors, completing coursework in art history, drawing, graphic communications, photography and digital media and computer tools in the arts. All students must pass the junior year Block Review, a portfolio review that takes place after students complete 27 credit hours of art and graphic communications courses. Successful students continue with courses in color, design principles, design history, typography, graphic design software, design theory and issues, concept and development and software and technical processes. All students create a portfolio and senior exhibition.
M. F. A. candidates in Art may choose from several concentrations, including the Graphic Communications and Interdisciplinary Practice and Emerging Forms concentrations. Graphic Communications students focus on graduate studio work, environmental design studio, selected topics in design and professional practices. Students must pass a portfolio review each semester as well as pass oral examinations and create a thesis exhibition.
A portfolio is required with the application to the M. F. A. program. Art course lab fees may apply. Merit and need-based scholarships are available, as are graduate assistantships. Texas residents are encouraged to apply for state-sponsored grants and scholarships.
