Scope of Program:
UCLA's well-respected Film, Television and Digital Media program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to concentrate in one of six areas: Animation, Digital Media, Narrative Film Production, Documentary, Screenwriting or Cinema and Media. Students take coursework in cinematography, film editing, screenwriting, directing and television/video production, then complete 20 quarter units of coursework and a senior project in their concentration area. M. F. A. candidates in Animation study animation design, computer and interactive animation, drawing, visual thinking, Maya and animation electives. Graduate students must complete several film projects.
Undergraduate students in Design Media Arts concentrate on design culture and history, color, form, drawing, typography, interactive media, visual communication, 3D modeling and motion and network media. Students complete a senior project and may complete an internship or directed research. Graduate-level students in Design Media Arts focus on interactive media, dynamic media, studio work and seminars. Teaching assistantships, fellowship grants and nonresident tuition waivers are available. A thesis project, including an exhibit, written record and oral examinations, is required.
Applicants to all Design Media Arts programs must submit a portfolio. UCLA offers some merit-based scholarships for undergraduates, most of which range from $500 to $2,000 per year. Need-based scholarships are available. UCLA Extension offers certificates in Design Communication Arts, Advanced Web and Interaction Design and Advanced Print and Graphic Communication.
