Founded in 1867, Howard University serves approximately 9,689 students enrolled in more than 130 areas of study through 13 schools and colleges. The College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) consists of 21 departments and program within the divisions of Fine Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. The Department of Art has several program offerings for aspiring animators.

Options include a BFA in Design or Electronic Studio Arts (Digital Media Arts, eStudio), and an MFA in Design or Electronic Studio. Design BFA students will develop the ability to produce visual forms such as digital, motion and interactive, printed, three-dimensional, and two-dimensional "as solutions to studio and related real life problems," says the school.

The Electronic Studio Arts BFA is designed for students preparing for careers Two- and Three-Dimensional Animators, Special Effect Artists for TV and Film, Motion Graphics, Product Design, and Web Design. "The curriculum combines the fundamentals of visual arts: drawing, painting, illustration, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional design. Photography and video, with intensive applied computer technology and software techniques as applied to visual communications and design. Coursework is designed to incorporate prerequisite visual arts courses to prepare students to be competitive in the visual arts and computer-aided art and design fields."

The Electronic Studio MFA “combines the fundamentals of visual arts: drawing, painting, illustration, animation, multimedia, 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional design, photography and video, with intensive applied computer technology and software techniques as applied to visual communications and design.” Like coursework for the undergraduate eStudio program, coursework for the MFA is designed to incorporate prerequisite visual arts courses to prepare students to be competitive in the visual arts and computer aided art and design fields.

Graduates of this program are also prepared to seek positions in the academic sector, research, primary and secondary education, and more.
