Established in 2002, Sony Pictures Animation is a owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment. The company produces CGI animation for motion pictures. Sony Pictures Animation is behind blockbuster films such as The Smurfs and Monster House, as well as Surf’s Up, Open Season, and Boog and Elliot’s Midnight Bun Run. Since its first feature film was released in 2006, Sony’s animated films have grossed nearly $1 billion. The company’s first feature alone (Open Season), grossed nearly $2 million.

In addition to earning big dollars at the box office, Sony’s animated features have attracted attention from the Academy. The 2007 film Surf’s Up was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 80th Annual Academy Awards.
