Scope of Program:
The Ohio State University offers both a B. A. and B. F. A. program in Art. Students are initially accepted into the B. A. program and must pass a portfolio review at the end of the first year of study in order to be admitted to the B. F. A. program. B. F. A. candidates in the Art and Technology program complete core courses in 2D and 3D art, 4D real and recorded time, photography, painting, drawing, digital imaging, 3D studio art and art history. They continue with coursework in multimedia authoring, holography, video art, new media, 3D animation, new media robotics, 3D computer sculpting and web comic production. All students complete a senior seminar and create a thesis exhibition.
Visual Communication Design students complete first-year design foundation courses in design history, design fundamentals, design practice and visual principles. All students take a spring entrance examination after completing these courses. Students admitted to the major concentrate on design research, design media, visual communication design, typography, collaborative design, visual communication design media and professional practices. All students complete a design seminar and create a capstone thesis project.
M. F. A. candidates in Ohio State's Art and Technology program focus on art history, art criticism, video art, game art, participatory design and professional practices. All students must complete a teaching semester and create a portfolio and thesis. M. F. A. candidates in the Digital Animation and Interactive Media program concentrate on videogame prototyping and production, digital cinematography, 3D virtual environments, experimental and independent animation and interactive arts media. All students complete studio seminars and create a thesis.
A portfolio is required with the application to the M. F. A. program. Art, merit and need-based scholarships are available. Teaching and graduate assistantships are available for M. F. A. candidates. Residents of Ohio are encouraged to apply for state scholarships and grants.
