Scope of Program:
B. F. A. candidates at Montclair State University begin their studies with core coursework in figure drawing, color, light and time, art history, 2D and 3D design, concept, process and application and Adobe Creative Suite. Animation and Illustration students continue with courses in illustration, 2D animation, screenwriting, 3D modeling, visual narrative, character design and 3D computer illustration. Students complete a final project and create an exhibition. Graphic Design students concentrate on typography, layout, interactive multimedia design, marketing, advertising and web page design. All students complete an internship and create a portfolio.
M. F. A. candidates may create their own interdisciplinary program or concentrate in one area of studio art, such as Video Art or Multimedia. Students complete coursework in theory and criticism, project criticism, art history, modern philosophies of art and studio art seminars. Students complete a M. F. A. research project and create a thesis and exhibition.
A portfolio is required for application to both the B. F. A. and M. F. A. programs. Graphic Design students must pass a portfolio review in order to graduate. Montclair State University offers merit scholarships, need-based scholarships and graduate assistantships. New Jersey Tuition Aid Grants are available for residents who can demonstrate great financial need.
