Scope of Program:
ANIMATION BFA: MCAD’s animation major provides you with a broad historical perspective that fosters an appreciation of animation’s adaptability as an applied and fine art.
You are exposed to animation techniques using illustrated, stop-motion, and computer-generated approaches. You develop a personal style through rigorous foundation studies after which you are encouraged to collaborate and expand your individual work.
The program equips graduates to move into the world beyond with visual communication skills as well as up-to-date technical proficiencies.
GRAPHIC DESIGN BFA: MCAD’s graphic design major produces designers who creatively investigate and engage with innovative problems, concepts, content, and form.
We promote curiosity, process, and making, and encourage you to develop your voice to produce original work. We produce graduates that are active practitioners and leaders within local, national, and international design communities.
GRAPHIC DESIGN CERTIFICATE: With a strong focus on ideation, process, and portfolio development, MCAD’s graphic design certificate program empowers you to create a compelling body of work while also preparing you for the professional rigors and standards needed to successfully enter the field of graphic design.
WEB AND MULTIMEDIA ENVIRONMENTS BFA: MCAD’s web and multimedia environments major is dedicated to the exploration and combination of emerging technologies and traditional practices in media arts.
Media arts may refer to the internet, virtual environments, software as a creative platform, art installations, screen-based works, and performances.
In this major you will investigate four central topics across the curriculum from technical, theoretical, and historical vantage points: the network, multimedia, interactivity, and generative practices. You will be able to identify and evaluate relevant works, both historical and contemporary, as well as create and evaluate your own work within the theoretical and technical territory of each of these cornerstones.
By the time you graduate, you will have a strong understanding of the four central topics and be versed in combining them to create projects in a multitude of mediums with aesthetic and intellectual significance.
MFA (SPECIALIZE IN MEDIUM, INCLUDING ANIMATION OR GRAPHIC DESIGN): MCAD’s MFA program strives to build a community of makers, thinkers, theorists, researchers, and creative professionals.
As you pursue creative work in a lively, interdisciplinary environment, you respond to social, cultural, and professional needs while engaging in entrepreneurial opportunities that stretch across art and design practices. An individual faculty mentorship and formal committee reviews guide you toward mastery of your discipline as a practitioner.
Most credits are earned through one-on-one work with a faculty mentor. Others are earned through critique and liberal arts seminars, as well as a range of engaging educational opportunities, including an optional internship. The final year culminates in a capstone thesis exhibition and paper.
Combined, this advanced degree affords you many career opportunities in studio work, as well as the opportunity to teach.
