Scope of Program:
Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) requires incoming freshmen to participate in the Foundation Program. Foundation courses include drawing, painting, sculptural forms, electronic media, visual thinking and "Finding Baltimore," a course in which students discover the city, its people and issues. Undergraduate Animation students may concentrate on 2D animation, 3D animation or both. They also take courses in electronic media, computer animation, pre- and post-production and history of
animation. Drawing students focus on art history, life drawing, painting, independent drawing, studio drawing and professional practices. Graphic Design majors complete coursework in typography, flexible design studio, photo imaging and advanced design. Illustration students concentrate on concept art, character design, book, digital and lifestyle illustration and photography. Interaction Design and Art students focus on digital games, game/play, sound, robotic arts, participatory projects and networks. All students complete a senior thesis project.
Master's degree candidates in MICA's highly-ranked graduate programs work with faculty and fellow students in studio courses, graduate seminars and studio electives. Students create a thesis project and exhibition. Graduate students at MICA are encouraged to pursue interdisciplinary study, taking courses outside their chosen field and integrating emerging media with traditional studio work. MICA offers
post-baccalaureate certificates in addition to its Master of Fine Arts programs.
All applicants to MICA must submit a portfolio for review. This may be done via a review on National Portfolio Day or digital submission. Academic excellence and art scholarships are available. Maryland residents are encouraged to apply for Knott Scholarships and the Maryland Awards Program.
