Scope of Program:
Students in Kean University's Graphic Design program complete core coursework in visual form, design and visual culture, visualizing techniques and computers in graphic design. They go on to study art history, studio skills, visual communications history, typography, web and interactive media design, motion graphics and design for mobile platforms. All students complete a capstone project and create a portfolio.
Studio Art students may choose among several concentrations, including Computer/Video Art and Illustration. All Studio Art students begin their studies with foundation coursework in drawing, color theory, painting, 2D and 3D design, sculpture, computer art and printmaking. Students must pass a portfolio review after 30 credit hours of study. Computer/Video Art students then concentrate on photography, modern art, video production, visual thinking, studio art and experimental video. Illustration students focus on visual thinking, illustration techniques, watercolor and painting. All students complete a capstone project.
A portfolio is required with the application to the B. F. A. programs in Computer/Video Art, Illustration and Graphic Design. Art and academic merit scholarships are available, as are need-based scholarships. New Jersey residents who can demonstrate substantial financial need may be eligible for New Jersey Tuition Aid Grants.
