Scope of Program:
Florida International University offers both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts program in Art. B. F. A. candidates must complete more studio courses and participate in a final Thesis Year, which includes preparation of a folio, an exhibition, critiques and a thesis paper. Students in both programs take core classes in art history, 2D and 3D design, drawing and visual thinking, then specialize in their concentration area. Master's degree candidates are expected to complete 18 semester hours of coursework in their concentration area as well as classes in art history, directed study, critical studies in visual arts and studio art. They must also create and present a graduate exhibition.
Florida International University's Art program strongly emphasizes mentoring. Undergraduates are expected to meet with at least two mentors twice per semester. Faculty critiques are also important components of the undergraduate art program, and students must demonstrate achievement in their chosen discipline in order to proceed to their Thesis Year.
Florida International University offers scholarships and (for graduate students) teaching assistantships. State residents may apply for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. Internships are available. Master's degree program applicants must submit a portfolio.
